How to Play Ultimate.

STARTS WITH

Players a Side

Ultimate frisbee is a seven-a-side team sport played with a flying disc on a rectangular field, featuring an end zone at each end.

TO MOVE THE DISC

Set a Pivot Foot & Pass Forward

No running with the disc. To progress forward, throw passes from player to player.

Score a point by

Catching at the End Zone

The primary aim of each team is to score by successfully completing a pass to a teammate in the opposing end zone they are attacking.

Ultimate Rule

.

1

The Field

Is set in a rectangular shape with end zones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards long by 40 yeards wide, with end zones 20 yards deep.

2

Start a Play

With both teams lining up on the front of opposite end zone lines. The defense throws (“pulls”) the disc to the offense.

3

Score By

The offense scores by catching a pass in the defense’s end zone. Teams switch direction after each goal, starting the next point with a new pull.

4

Move the Disc

Players advance in any direction by passing to a teammate. They cannot run with the disc. The thrower has 10 seconds to throw, with the marker counting the stall.

5

Change of Possession

When a pass is incomplete (e.g., out of bounds, drop, block, interception, stall), the defense immediately gains possession and becomes the offense.

6

Substitutions

Players not in the game may substitute for those on the field after a score, during an injury timeout, or at other specified breaks, ensuring fresh players are ready to continue the match.

The Nature of Ultimate Frisbee.

Non-Contact

Players must attempt to avoid physical contact during play. Picks and screens are also prohibited.

Fouls

Foul occurs when a player initiates contact affecting play. If it causes loss of possession, play continues as if possession was retained. If the accused player disagrees, the play is redone.

Spirit of the Game

Ultimate’s rules are built on the Spirit of the Game, placing fair play responsibility on players. Competition is encouraged, but never at the cost of respect, adherence, or the joy of play.

Self-Officiating

Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.

The Beauty of Ultimate.

The Layout

Ultimate is perhaps the only sport in which “Getting Horizontal” is as common as getting vertical. The impressive and awe-inspiring sight never gets old as athletes routinely dive to make a catch on offense, or knock down an opponents pass on defense.

The Huck

A long, mostly full-field throw with pinpoint accuracy to a streaking cutter is a majestic and mesmerizing sight. A handler’s ability to apply the laws of physics, often times bending the disc along a curved flight path to a precise location, illustrates the skill of an elite thrower.

The Sky

The ability to sky your opponent to catch a 50/50 disc as it slowly floats in the air depends on a few factors like timing and position. But mostly it all comes down to who is the most explosive and can jump the highest.

Spirit of the Game

A unique and defining element of ultimate, Spirit of the Game places the responsibility of fair play solely on the athletes themselves, reinforcing mutual respect and trust between opponents, communication and conflict resolution skills.
